It’s all systems go for All-Cape

EAST London will be flooded with bowlers when the 2014 men’s All-Cape gets staged in East London starting tomorrow.

The week-long event has attracted 144 teams from throughout the Cape province with players arriving from as far as Cape Town, Kimberley and Prieska in the Northern Cape to Port Elizabeth and the Southern Cape.

All-Cape tournament convenor Cliffie Boucher, who is also the president of the Border Bowling Association, said everything was going according to plan.

“There have been lots and lots of planning meetings with the respective clubs and everything is on track for a super week. Numbers are down regarding entries compared to previous years with entries from Cape Town and the Boland areas low but this is to be expected given the current economic situation,’’ said Boucher.

Boucher added there will be an opening ceremony at the Comrades Club for those teams drawn to play there.

All the playing venues are in East London with two games played per day within the 12 sections.

The venues to be used are East London, Comrades, Cambridge, Gonubie, Beacon Bay, Nahoon, Typos, Old Selbornians and Bonza Bay bowling clubs.

Greenkeepers have worked hard at ensuring players enjoy the best playing surfaces.

Registration for teams takes place at the Comrades Club, which is the headquarters, today from 4pm to 8pm.

It will be tough going throughout the week and competition will be fierce right up until the playoffs which are scheduled for next Friday.

With the tournament being played at home, clubs affiliated to the Border Bowls Association are well represented and many will fancy themselves to go all the way to the final.

East London has been blessed with top-class bowls this year with the South African B Inter-Districts tournament being staged here recently while the women’s All-Cape is also set for East London on May 3.

The women’s event is also down on numbers with only 74 teams entered representing 296 players.
