Cutting-edge upgrade for EL laser eye surgery

THE Life Eye Hospital East London, which offers the only excimer eye laser surgery in town, has upgraded its technology.

The hospital, in Southernwood, is a joint venture between Life Healthcare and four local ophthalmologists.

It updated the system it uses for laser refractive surgery known as “laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis” or Lasik.

“The acquisition of this new technology means our patients will continue to receive world-class treatment and care in a patient-friendly environment,” hospital manager Isabelle Peters said.

The hospital’s excimer laser has the ability to remove microscopic amounts of tissue from under the cornea with a high degree of accuracy and without damaging the surrounding corneal tissue.

It corrects eye conditions such as myopia (near-sightedness), hypermetropia (far-sightedness), and astigmatism, which cause patients to wear spectacles or contact lenses.

“For most patients, this surgery drastically reduces the dependence on glasses,” Peters said.

The surgery takes 15 minutes per eye and patients spend close to three hours in hospital, including pre-operative preparation and post-operative observation.

“After the procedure is complete, the patient experiences some scratchiness in the eye, but the following day most patients report their eyes feel comfortable again.

“Visual rehabilitation after surgery is fairly fast, with most patients having their ‘goal’ vision the morning after surgery,” Peters said.

Although this is not a new treatment, the technology upgrade at the hospital will drastically improve the treatment available. — vuyiswav@dispatch.co.za
