Toilet protesters raise a stink

FED-UP with having to use bucket toilets, disgruntled informal dwellers from NU1 in Mdantsane yesterday  marched to a councillor’s house and threw buckets of sewage at it.

The residents claim the councillor promised them that a project to build flushing toilets would start on June 14 and community members will be employed.

BCM spokesman Thandy Matebese said the sanitation depart ment was currently busy emptying existing pit latrines with 32 already completed.

“Consultants are currently busy with the design to link the house holds to the waterborne sanitation networks,” Matebese said.

In Cape Town former ANC coun cillor, Andile Lili, and ANC coun cillor and Youth League member, Loyiso Nkohla, were arrested along with 183 residents after dumping sewage on the steps of the Western Cape provincial legislature.

They remained unapologetic for their actions when released from custody last week. — arethal@dis patch.co.za

“Where these buckets are , people must fight. I don’t think they must please immoral leaders … people cannot live like this anymore,” Lili said.
