Border wallop Easterns

Sigwili leads the charge with four scalps.

MORGAN Steyn crashed a four off his first ball to take the Border U19 team over the line with 79 balls remaining for a dominant win over the Easterns U19’s on the fourth day of the U19 Khaya Majola Coca-Cola Cricket Week in Durban yesterday.

“The guys are extremely chuffed and they enjoyed the win,” said Border coach Raymond Booi.

Border chased down the low target of 143 to win with ease thanks to a smooth 92-run partnership between opening batsmen Bathandwa Isaacs (52) and Aubrey Ferraira (41no) which led the team to the brink of victory before Isaacs was bowled with the scores level.

The chase started in positive fashion with Border captain Ryelan Hardnick cracking three fours in a quick-fire 17 from 19 balls.

He was then the first wicket to fall as he was caught off the bowling of Lance Humphrey leaving Border on 27/1 from 6.1 overs.

Craig Sansom then came and went for a 27ball 11 with the score on 50/2 from 13.1 overs.

Ferraira joined Isaacs for their match-winning partnership, before Steyn hit the winning runs as Border finished on 146/3.

“Aubrey is in top form at the moment and Bathandwa has been battling recently and really stood up and delivered today,” said Booi.

Earlier in the day a top bowling effort from the Border team, led impeccably by strike bowler Ngazibini Sigwili skittled the Easterns batting line-up for a below-par total.

Sigwili bowled brilliantly to register impressive figures of 4/17 in eight overs as he terrorised the Easterns batsmen.

He was ably supported by captain Hardnick, 2/29 off 10, Sithembile Langa, 2/34 off 10 overs and Aphiwe Elembe. 2/20 off five overs, as Easterns struggled to 142 all out with still three overs to be bowled in the innings.

Cheslyn Neethling contributed with some very tight bowling – conceding only 2.55 per over with 0/23 off nine overs.

Jurie Snyman was the only Easterns batsmen to trouble the Border bowlers as he held the Easterns faltering innings together, scoring a 124-ball 67 before becoming the eighth wicket to fall and Sigwili’s third.

Only three other batsmen managed to get into double figures with opener Reder van Rooyen scoring the second highest score with 16.

“Our bowlers were fantastic,” said Booi.

“Ngazibini and Aphiwe have formed a devastating opening partnership and they are in great form.”
