Sityatha dumps Premier League

WHILE some boxers are still bitter for missing out on the lucrative Premier Boxing League (PBL), Lwandile Sityatha is withdrawing from the series passing on purse monies of about R320000.

Having just fought once in the league with disastrous consequences when he lost against Cape Town’s Mzuvukile Magwaca after looking listless due to a weight struggle, the Mdantsane boxer was also scheduled to face Mfundo Gwayana and Makazole Tete to wrap up his participation in the series.

Each bout over six rounds earns a boxer R60000 in the league with the division winner getting R200000.

The overall winner walks away with a cool R1-million.

But Sityatha was already out of the running for the R1-million after he huffed and puffed to a disappointing loss to Magwaca when his battle with the scales became apparent.

After fighting in the junior bantamweight for the first time where he rekindled his form in his impressive eight round knockout of Lusindiso Siyo to win the WBA Pan African crown at the Orient Theatre last weekend, it is obvious that the 25-year-old is comfortable in the heavier weight class.

Displaying his renowned body punching ability that seemed to abandon him in his latest bouts, Sityatha was his old menacing self as he drilled away with his ferocious right hand to put him down and out in the eighth frame.

He had earlier dropped his brave foe in the fourth round but Siyo, from Port Elizabeth, proved to be made of sterner stuff.

Sityatha’s promoter Ayanda Matiti admitted that the junior bantamweight division is the perfect weight class for his charge.

“It is no use forcing Sityatha to fight in the flyweight division where his performance will be sub-par because of weight issues,” Matiti said.

“Forcing him to continue in the PBL because of money will not only be risky to his career but it will be greedy on our part at the expense of a young boy.”

Matiti also revealed that Sityatha will vacate his SA flyweight crown as well, paving the way for Tete to battle for the crown.

The Mdantsane boxer who goes by the name “Angel” fought to a draw against Morris Lento in his last title defence.

While he managed to hold on to the crown, his performance again left much to be desired.

Matiti said Sityatha took the fight even though he had weight issues because he knew that Lento would not beat him.

“We could have vacated the title then but we knew that Lento would never beat Sityatha even if he had weight issues.

“But we cannot continue forcing him to fight as a flyweight because that will have adverse effects.”
