BCM booze cops best in the land

THE Buffalo City Metro traffic department has been crowned the best municipal traffic office for having the most effective plan to combat drunk drivers.

The department was given the award at the National Road Safety Awards held at the International Convention Centre (ICC) on Thursday night for consistently executing a high number of drunk driving arrests throughout the year.

There are about 265 municipal traffic departments in South Africa.

A group of about 400 traffic officers from all over the country were in East London on Thursday and yesterday for the annual traffic chiefs’ summit where they discussed ways to reduce the road carnage.

Road Traffic Management Corporation acting chief executive Gilberto Martins lauded BCM traffic officers for making road safety a day-to-day priority.

BCM traffic boss Berny Martin said the recognition was well deserved. He leads a team of 65 traffic officers who conduct patrols and roadblocks in East London and King William’s Town.

He said more than 100 people were being arrested for drunk driving every month in the metro.

“In BCM we arrest drunk drivers every day, we don’t wait for December and if you work with a committed team you can get to whatever height you want to reach,” he said. “The award goes to all my officers.”

Transport MEC Thandiswa Marawu said the award would restore confidence in the officers who worked under challenging circumstances. — zwangam@dispatch.coza
