GERMAN-BORN producer and house DJ Ralf Gum says South Africa has become a home away from home for him and his music.
Not surprisingly, Sony music presented Gum with a gold disc award for selling more than 20000 records through his latest release, Never Leaves You.
What’s more, Gum already considers himself a “local DJ”.
“Every time I go back to Germany I feel as if I’m leaving my home behind,” Gum said yesterday, adding he had performed across the globe, including Asia, Europe and America, but South Africa had been the best place for him so far.
“Besides the fantastic people and weather, I think South Africa is today the only country where you can get gold for this kind of music,” he said.
When asked if he had given his eight- month-old daughter an African name, Gum joked they wanted to name her Lulu.
The name never worked “because in Germany Lulu means toilet”, he laughed.
So Gum and the child’s mum settled for Lilo instead.
