“THIS poetry I speak of is Xhosa in its heart, Zulu in its kindness, English in its modesty, Sotho in its talk, Venda in its beauty, Coloured in its authenticity. Poetry is a culture, spoken in different tongues, yet its message is like a passage that all have once or twice walked in.” This poem extract was written by Hudson Park High School Grade 11 pupil Avile Tongo, and truly captures the atmosphere of the Selborne College isiXhosa Society culture evening on Wednesday night . The society was started by Selborne isiXhosa teacher Nolwandle Mnwana-Mini and some of her pupils to not only create awareness of the isiXhosa culture, but also to raise funds for the Mdantsane NU Orphanage. “The students were involved in everything and so keen to do something that would help others,” Mnwana-Mini said. The evening was both a celebration and a remembrance of the Xhosa culture and its traditions. Songs filled the hall on several occasions, ranging from the Selborne College Junior Choir performing UYesu lo unobulele ngam to bursts of applause and laughter, to stunned silence as their own poet took to the stage to emphasise the value of education. Two Selborne College pupils passionately performed a skit about their roots and the importance of remembering one’s heritage. Poetry was read and more choir songs were heard, this time performed by the Clarendon Gospel Choir. Minutes later the hall erupted with laughter as the curtains opened and seven Selborne College pupils transformed into gumboot dancers and performed several dances to the delight of the audience. They whistled and coaxed each other on during the extremely physical performance and truly embraced the tradition started many years ago on the gold mines of South Africa. Overall, the evening was a great success and well supported. One could feel and see the pride on the face of each pupil that participated, and the joy as they shared their talents and culture with others. An evening to remember.
