UNSCRUPULOUS club owners in East London defaced more than 50 Daily Dispatch posters last week, using them to advertise their businesses or upcoming events.
As a result the Daily Dispatch marketing team had to employ people at extra cost to check various news routes for damage to posters.
Dispatch marketing manager, Sydwell Mtwana said when he tried to contact those responsible for defacing the Dispatch posters, they had become rude and aggressive .
“This is getting out of hand, many of our posters have been defaced and some have been removed and placed in areas that are not on our routes.
“This is costing us a lot of money,” he said.
Mtwana said it cost the paper R5.10 to put up each poster.
“Over 50 of our posters have been defaced.
“When we contacted Buffalo City Municipality to check the authenticity of these companies, we found out that they were doing this illegally as they were not recognised by the municipality,” he said.
“It is a costly exercise to put up these posters but there are people who don’t care; who just do as they wish.”
Two companies who defaced Daily Dispatch posters are Musos Club and an anonymous company advertising a dance function at a steakhouse in East London this past Saturday.
BCM spokesperson Samkelo Ngwenya said the municipality condemned the defacing of Dispatch posters, which showed a lack of respect for municipal by- laws. “We really condemn what they have done and we will take action against them,” he said
Attempts to get comment from Errol and Joseph Taylor, who are managers of Musos Club, proved unsuccessful as they did not return calls. — By BONGANI FUZILE, Crime Reporter. bonganif@dispatch.co.za
