FOUR armed robbers hit the jackpot at the Sun City casino in North West province when they walked out with about R1.7million two weeks ago, Pretoria News reported yesterday.
The men entered the main casino undetected on a Friday night, quietly robbed three cashiers, and left without a stir.
Sources said the police arrested at least one suspect, though this could not be confirmed.
Sun International spokesperson Sue Klerck said that on December 12 at about 11.30pm, four men approached the casino desk where patrons cash in their winnings and produced firearms.
“They took all money available. Customers didn’t even realise it, but our security was there within minutes of the guys leaving,” she said.
Klerck said the men were not detected because they did not appear suspicious. They fled the casino as quickly as they had arrived.
“We captured the incident on CCTV cameras and the footage did assist the police in making arrests,” she added.
Rustenburg police spokesperson Constable Botshelo Mothutsane said a case of armed robbery had been opened and the provincial organised crime unit was investigating.
He confirmed the suspects made off with R1.7million, but would not be drawn to confirm the arrests. Mothutsane said the commander at the Sun City satellite police station would not disclose much information because the investigation was at a sensitive stage.
The week prior to the incident, Sun City’s internationally renowned Gary Player Country Club hosted the prestigious Nedbank Golf Challenge. — DDC
