Biker bride and groom make history at Kei rally

2008/04/30

EAST London’s annual biking rally, held at Kei Mouth at the weekend, was briefly turned into a wedding venue when two enthusiasts tied the knot.

Robbie and Debbie (née Van As) Irlam said they chose the occasion and venue because it offered something different.

“We wanted our wedding to be special, one all our friends would be at without having to go out of their way,” the excited bride said.

The couple and about 500 other Eastern Cape bikers gathered at The Bush Pig in Kei Mouth for a weekend of fun and games where all money raised will be donated to charity.

Debbie, 48, a Johannesburg accountant, said she and Queenstown Rider’s 54-year- old Robbie had known each other for a long time before they became involved.

“When we decided to get married two months ago we thought that this upcoming rally would be the perfect occasion,” she said.

It also proved a special first for Pastor Paul Wright, of the Christian Motorcyclists group.

“This year we made history by having a wedding on our programme,” he said.

Wright said the Christian bikers’ group was always present at the rallies .

He said he had agreed to marry the couple under these different circumstances because he felt that where and how people choose to get married was not an issue.

“Even without the dressing up and confetti, our wedding was beautiful and a lot of fun because in the biking community we have our family and friends,” the couple said.

They said that from the rally they would be going to nearby Morgan’s Bay for their honeymoon before returning to Johannesburg to begin their lives together. - By NTANDO MAKHUBU
