Cholera now under control

UMTATA -- The cholera outbreak at the Umtata Maximum Security Prison is under control, Correctional Services Department spokesman Hein van Eyk said yesterday.

Following an outbreak last Friday and the death of Xolani Mgqawe, 48 prisoners were placed under observation.

Van Eyk said 11 of these prisoners were diagnosed as having cholera.

To prevent the spread of the disease these prisoners were isolated. Van Eyk said no more prisoners had been diagnosed with cholera. -- DDR
