50 police officers form crime watch

Crime Reporter

EAST LONDON -- A voluntary neighbourhood watch consisting of about 50 police officers in the West Bank area was formed here this week to fight crime in the area.

The neighbourhood watch consists of police officers living in Sunnyridge, Greenfields, Rosemount and the DaimlerChrysler extensions in the Sunnyridge area.

Superintendent Eddie Watson said the officers met on Monday to discuss the rising crime in their area, as some were also victims of crime.

"Our safe and crime-free area is turning into a crime paradise and members are no longer happy to accept this," he said.

Watson said officers will do patrols voluntarily while off duty and will be armed.

They will use blue lights, torches and spotlights to assist during night patrols.

He called on other community members to assist in the fight against crime and to join the patrols.

Anyone wishing to assist should contact Watson on 083-453-5919.
