Hellenic blitz beats Bucks

CAPE TOWN -- A brace of goals in the span of eight minutes saw Hellenic beat Bush Bucks 2-1 in a Premier Soccer League (PSL) match at Green Point Stadium here at the weekend after a goalless first half.

Grant Young opened the score in the 71st minute for Hellenic and put the result beyond the visitors' reach when he scored another in the 79th.

Both goals were set up by new signing George Hummell of Namibia.

Dennis Vukubi reduced the score in the 89th minute for Bucks.

The first shot at goal came from Bucks in the 11th minute when Wilfred Mugeyi's attempt was well saved by John Goodwin.

Mugeyi was having an excellent game on the left flank and was a thorn in Hellenic defence with his speed and robust play.

Bush Bucks were unlucky in the 44th minute when Clement Maziko crossed from the right to Mugeyi on the left and instead of shooting he passed back to his brother William, who blasted high over the bar.

Hummell came on in the 55th minute and immediately brought new life to the Cape side. Hellenic were fortunate in the 60th minute when a Bucks corner by Nkanyiso Buthelezi curled in and rebounded off the crossbar.

In the 71st minute Peter Petersen cleared the ball off the Hellenic goalline, the ball went to Hummell, who passed to Young and the striker rounded goalkeeper Bafana Mathivela and scored.

Eight minutes later Hummell again supplied the ball to Young, who dribbled his way past two defenders before scoring his second goal.

In the 89th minute, Vukubi outran a square defence and lobbed the ball over Goodwin's head to win a consolation goal.

The two teams meet again next weekend in the second leg of the first-round Rothmans knock-out competition.

lSundowns captain Daniel Mudau scored a hat-trick as the defending champions thrashed African Wanderers 5-1 in a PSL match at the Kings Park Stadium yesterday. The half-time score was 2-0 following early goals by Alex Bapela and Mudau.

Wanderer's best chance of the game came shortly after the opening whistle when striker Donovan Wilson went close with a lob from 15 metres out, but it was all downhill for the home side thereafter.

Wanderers suffered another setback in the 20th minute when Wilson was sent off by referee Gabriel Sekopo for elbowing Bapela.

lRia Stars ran out easy winners in their PSL match against Lamontville Golden Arrows 3-1 at the Mpetha Stadium yesterday. Scorers for Stars were Kenneth Matjiane (13th) Thapele Liau (33rd) and Sam Pam's indirect free kick (77th).

l The PSL match between Free State Stars and Classic scheduled for yesterday at the Charles Mopeli Stadium has been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. -- Sapa
