Plenty of action for young Border swimmers

EAST LONDON -- Border swimmers will have plenty of opportunities to show their mettle over the next few weeks with a number of galas and training camps arranged around the country.

The first Border short-course championships took place at Stirling High at the weekend and it proved a huge success.

It was encouraging to see the large number of participants at the event.

Hosted by Harlequins, three other clubs -- Stingrays, Aquanova and Vikings -- also participated. Some excellent times were made and judging by these, Border should excel at junior galas this season.

Three swimmers from the Border -- Shaun Barson and Mark Randall of Stingrays and Liezl Cloete of Harlequins -- have been selected to attend a special South African regional squad four-day camp for a gala against a touring Australian country districts squad in Durban at the end of the month.

Later next month swimmers from Harlequins and Stingrays travel to Cape Town to compete in the SA short-course championships where the opposition will include members of the SA Olympic team.

This should prove a great experience for these youngsters when they are pitted against the best in the country.

Members of Vikings and Aquanova clubs have been invited to participate in the Otters gala in Bloemfontein next month.

All these events will be dress-rehearsals for the main competitions during the coming summer, including the nationals in Durban next year. -- DDR
