Sobukwe's death commemorated

By Denver Donian

KING WILLIAM'S TOWN -- The 22nd anniversary marking the death of PAC founder Dr Robert Sobukwe will be held at Graaff-Reinet on Saturday.

PAC presidential candidate Clarence Makwetu is scheduled to deliver the keynote address at the commemorative service which commences at 10am.

PAC publicity secretary Bonginkosi Njoli said the event would be preceded by cultural activities, a display of an Apla drill and many other activities that would make the day "a special one".

He said Sobukwe would be remembered as a man who led a group of Africanists out of the ANC in 1959 and formed what is still is known as "a ship of freedom", the PAC of Azania.

Sobukwe led the 1960 PAC anti-pass campaign and coined the slogan "no bail, no fine, no defence".

He was subsequently sentenced to three years' imprisonment but was not released when his sentence expired.

The National Party then passed the "Sobukwe Clause" which empowered them to detain Sobukwe indefinitely.

He was later banished to Kimberley where he died of cancer in 1978.
