Escapee caught after woman gang-raped

By Kerry Engelbrecht

UMTATA -- One of 15 dangerous awaiting-trial prisoners who escaped from the Kwaaiman police cells in Mqanduli on Saturday was re-arrested after he and two other gunmen allegedly gang-raped a woman in her home on Sunday night.

According to Superintendent Nondumiso Jafta, the woman sustained severe injuries.

Jafta urged the community to provide information leading to the arrests of the other 13 prisoners still on the run. One turned himself in on Saturday.

Police said Purede Kolweni, facing murder and escaping-from-custody charges, was handed over to police by the community on Sunday night after the rape.

R200 was also stolen from the woman.

Kolweni now faces additional charges of escaping, rape and armed robbery.
