Sentence for baby's car death RIDGELAND, South Carolina -- A woman whose 10-day-old baby died in a sweltering car while she played video poker for seven hours was given five years' probation in a case that fed a backlash against what's been called the "crack cocaine of gambling". Gail Baker, 27, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter. Her daughter, Joy, died in August 1997 after two hours in the car while the temperature was 30C. Then-governor David Beasley, who coined the "cocaine" phrase, called for a ban on the game. Beasley was later defeated by Jim Hodges, who had financial backing from video gambling operators and has called for a tax on the R15billion industry. -- Sapa-AP Stocks & Stats Editorial Entertainment Features Television & Radio Sport Weather Tides Aircraft |
