Police hold 15 for dagga, firearms

UMTATA -- Fifteen people were arrested by police in Transkei at the weekend on various charges ranging from possession of dagga to possession of illegal firearms, police said yesterday.

Lusikisiki-based members of the public order policing unit arrested four people after searching their homes at Nqabeni near Lusikisiki and found illegal firearms.

During an early morning roadblock at Lower Ntafufu police found 10 rifles and 34 cartridges in a bakkie. Eight guns were homemade. Seven men were arrested and will appear in court tomorrow.

Two men were arrested in Flagstaff after they were each found in possession of a .38 revolver and a total of six bullets.

* Three suspects aged between 25 and 30 were arrested by police and a fourth was fatally wounded outside Flagstaff while police were in pursuit of a vehicle they had hijacked earlier in the day.

* Sanab members arrested an 18 year-old girl in possession of dagga weighing 9 grams and a 19 year-old man in possession of two suitcases of dagga.

They were arrested during a roadblock at Misty Mount near Libode. -- DDR
