Gambler doubles up to win R3 million

By Adrienne Carlisle

GRAHAMSTOWN -- An ecstatic young Port Alfred resident became an instant triple millionaire yesterday when he hit a poker machine jackpot at the Fish River Sun by doubling up 20 times.

Larry James Maree, 29, who runs a small coffee shop in Port Alfred, wept when he struck gold after eight hours of frustration.

"He decided to double-up from a two pair and then 20 times thereafter his dream came true," said Fish River Sun public relations and marketing manager Mrs Nikki Botha.

Although he claims his lifestyle will not immediately change, Maree intends buying a deep-sea fishing boat, a classy sports car and in the spirit of Valentine's month, will take his girlfriend on the romantic trip of her choice.

The machine on which Maree was playing delivered R3014816, the highest payout from the Fish River Sun to date.

Described as a "regular poker-playing fundi", Maree told casino employees he had popped in to relax and enjoy himself, but had not expected to win much.

"When he realised he had won, he burst into tears. He kept saying he could not believe it had happened to him," said Mrs Botha.

Once he had bought the boat, sports car and Valentine's trip, Maree said he intended "investing the rest".
