3 warders killed for cash

CAPE TOWN -- Three off-duty warders, a woman and two men, were shot dead while on their way to deposit money at a bank in Villiersdorp in the Boland yesterday.

Correctional Services spokesman Johan Pienaar said a fourth warder was being questioned about the incident.

The three warders, who have not yet been identified, were shot dead in their vehicle about 14 kilometres from the Helderstroom Prison.

The woman managed to alert prison staff on her cellphone before she died in the car with her two colleagues.

Pienaar said police found the car with the bodies of the three warders inside but no sign of the money. -- Sapa
