8 held for two family feud deaths

UMTATA -- Police yesterday arrested eight suspects at Manyosini in Tabase administrative area near here following the death of two people in the area in a clash between two families last week.

Superintendent Nondumiso Jafta said police also confiscated three firearms.

Last week police confiscated seven guns during a raid in the area.

The recent killings were a sequel to the deaths of six boys in a handgrenade explosion in the area in May.

Since the incident the village has been tense.

lPolice yesterday released the names of four people who were killed in taxi-related attacks at Port St Johns and Lusikisiki on Sunday.

Supt Jafta said the victims were Mr Thembisile Gurayi, 33, Mr Delani Michael Sigotyana, 31, Mr Mthethunzima John Mdiyana, 32, and Mr Ndumiso Sigotyana, 36.

lIn Umtata, a 19-year-old man was stabbed to death in a quarrel with another man in Sutherland Street on Tuesday.

No arrests were made.

lMr Mazwi Mthandeki, 34, escaped death when a gunman fired shots at him during a quarrel here on Monday.

Supt Jafta said an arrest was expected soon as the suspect was known.

lPolice arrested two suspects aged 28 and 58 in possession of unlicensed firearms at Mdini near Ngqeleni.

They are expected to appear in court soon. -- Sapa
