Bill to set up accident compensation commission CAPE TOWN Draft legislation to set up a statutory commission of inquiry into a long-term and sustainable system of compensation for road accident victims was tabled in Parliament yesterday. Cabinet approved the proposed commission in June, shelving other plans to restructure the troubled Road Accident Fund, which has an accumulated deficit of R7,2 billion. According to a memorandum attached to the Road Accident Fund Commission Bill, the commission will be the shortest route to a credible system accepted by all stakeholders. It is seen as the most efficient and effective way of not only dealing with the crisis in the fund, where the deficit grows by almost R1 billion a year, but of achieving an equitable and affordable system of compensation for crash victims.-- Sapa |
