SANDF to recruit

part-time parachutists

QUEENSTOWN -- The South African National Defence Force's only parachute formation, 44 Parachute Brigade, will be recruiting part-time members stationed in the Eastern Cape at Group 46 in Umtata next Friday and Saturday.

The training forms part of the SANDF's commitment to make use of part-time forces in ensuring safety and security, communication officer Corporal Betsie van Heerden said.

Only members with previous parachute training, and under the age of 45 years, will be allowed to retrain and jump, while others may be considered for other positions in the part-time component.

Corporal Van Heerden said the full-time parachute component will deploy immediately in case of emergencies, but the part-time component will be expected to follow up and act as a reserve.

Instructors, medical personnel and administrative staff are expected to arrive in Umtata next weekend to ensure that part-time members can undergo training on home ground. A medical inspection will be carried out, and parachute retraining carried out on Friday. On Saturday, members will perform a jump. -- DDR
