EL Lions honour Robbie de Lange By Laine Redpath EAST LONDON -- One of the founders of the East London (Host) Lions Club, Mr Robbie de Lange, is to be guest of honour at the club's 40th anniversary dinner tomorrow. Mr De Lange, a former East London mayor, was the first Lions district governor in South Africa. The East London Lions Club was the second one formed in South Africa, in December 1957. Lions in East London are involved in projects to aid the less privileged. Projects have included the donating of a vehicle to Meals on Wheels, the building of a dormitory in Hogsback, the collection of funds to establish the Hillcombe Holiday Home for the Blind and the East London Youth Hostel. Young people have been helped to further their careers through grants or interest-free loans. The word Host was added to the club's name in 1987 to establish it as a senior club made up of dedicated members who have given years of service to the East London community. |
